Toronto Chapter update and 1st Game of Season – Everton (A) at The Yard!
Also posted on the Spurs Canada Facebook Group
Southern Ontario / Toronto Spurs fans,
We hope your summer is treating you wonderfully and that this finds you happy, healthy and hungry for another season filled with Spurs magic (and all the other wonders, horrors, joys, and oddities that come with supporting our beloved football club).
The boys are back and we hope all of you are too as Scotland Yard will host our first game of the 2016/17 Premier League season this Saturday morning at 10am. It’s been a good summer, but rest is over for Spurs as we have another title to chase.
Some other news:
1. Membership. If you have not joined yet, please go the Spurs Canada membership page and sign up for another year. This year we’ve introduced a new junior membership for those 16 and under (just $10 for junior, $25 for adult). Everyone who joins by midnight 12th August are entered into a draw for new 16/17 Spurs jersey. If you’ve already joined, you’re already entered, but if not this is a great chance to support our Canadian Spurs club and possibly win the new kit.
Your support as a member allows us to organize and continue to provide the opportunity to connect with each other, the club and to continue to enhance your experience as a Spurs supporter in Canada and represent your interests with the club and other supporter groups. We are non-profit, volunteer run, and greatly appreciate having you as our peers and members.
2. Updates for Toronto Chapter. This year there are a few changes. I am honoured to have taken over as Toronto Chapter Leader from Greg Polimis, who did a wonderful job steering the ship last season, building on Roger Lyne’s work the year before. Greg has taken over as our new Chairman of Spurs Canada (national), with past Chair Bill Daniel (from Vancouver) taking on the role of Membership Coordinator for Spurs Canada. Mark Sandler will continue to serve as our stalwart steward of funds as Treasurer. Mark, Greg and I are your local Toronto-Southern Ontario board members. Of course, we also have a number of long-time members among us who are past board reps so get to know us and your other mates when you’re down at the Yard or on Facebook.
3. Scotland Yard: Our home base. I am thrilled to say that Scotland Yard pub, our most-ly home for the last year is now our full-time home. The Yard has welcomed us and our supporters have enjoyed their hospitality so we’re now committing to the Yard as our new base. In turn, the Yard has committed to offering all of Spurs games for the entire season — Premier League, Champions League, FA & League Cups — where a broadcast or acceptable stream is available. So when you get a note about an upcoming game and want to know where to go, head to the Yard. Unless otherwise noted (e.g., early kickoff) brunch or the full menu will be available.
4. Communications. Spurs Canada’s website has been undergoing some subtle, important updates and so too is our membership database to better serve us all. We also have a Facebook group, too. We try to get the key messages about Spurs Canada events shared via email and Facebook as well as on our Twitter feed (@SpursCA) to reach those who prefer certain media over others (or just can’t get enough of us 🙂 ). As we are starting off with a new season and new membership scheme, please bear with us in case you happen to get multiple messages (we’ll do our best to reduce any redundancies or miss anyone). For the time being, if you have Toronto Chapter questions, send them my way.
The game is on at the Yard (doors open around 9:30 EST or so) or on TSN if you’re up at the cottage, staying home or, in my case, traveling abroad. As always, the Tottenham Hotspur website has the live radio broadcast on it as well.
Looking forward to a great year of football, fellowship and fun together in Spursy solidarity,
