How Close

Dare I say Supreme???

It was a long time ago now.It was a time when we dominated London, dominated England and was very close to reaching the pinnacle of  Europe, having been beaten by both a bar and a referee. This 1960;s Tottenham team was supreme.Infact that word stuck to define what we were back then.

We have had good teams since then. The Burkinshaw years…he took us down and brought us right back up,signed Ardiles and Villa and then Glen Hoddle. We were one of the best sides in England then but never supreme. Supreme means in another class. We were just a really really good team then. The 60′s edition of Tottenham  (at least the early 60′s edition of Tottenham) however was truly supreme.

Since then we’ve had a host of great players. Lineker,Sherringham,Klinsmann and of course the great David Ginola (who would Im sure love to play on this team we have today) but they were just great players and not on a team that was special or any where near supreme. But today my Tottenham Freinds we have a bunch of players that ARE supreme and a team that can be ranked with the best.We are close to an assemblance of supremeness but not quite there YET.

Today the competition is fierce. The old Division One of the Football League was the forerunner for the Premier League. The Football League was much more local and institutional (ok it was English) but it was limited. ‘Foreign’ players were virtually unheard of in the sixties as much of the creatve talented side of football came from Scotland or Ireland  or Wales (well if you look to Cliff Jones and Gareth Bale its more about speed!) where today creativity is football comes mostly continental Europe or further afield.

The Premier League is the strongest league in the world today because massive groups of people around the world follow it and wear the shirts of Manchester United, now City,Chelsea,Liverpool, the emerging Tottenham and a few nameless clubs (namely one from Woolwich who shall remain shirtless) and this has funded the TV rights to the point where owning an English club is about as viable as any club around the world and that has brought the cream of the footie world to England. That is why now there are more clubs in the Premier League that are getting stronger while elsewhere there are a handfull of clubs in total that can compete financially.

That brings us to the Tottenham team of today compared with Billy Nick’s team of the sixties. The Double team was divine but so is this team. Nicholson did add Jimmy Greaves the next year but Gareth Bale is our new Greaves and we have Modric,VDV,Adebayor,Sandro and Parker and we rank easily with the sixties team now….except the competition is,as I mentioned, stronger. Bjut this product is not finished yet and this amazing season is not finished yet.

The rest of the story is still to be written but if you did experience the teams of before or even the sicties team (there are a few of us out there that have done that too (Martin,Calico and you others)  you all know how hard it is to reach such heights and you know we are close…VERY CLOSE!

We are now officially the cream of London and a feared outfit worldwide. The sample Bale gave us during the Inter games that showed the world the potential we had is back even stronger.Harry has added power and mental ability to that team of last year and now we are on a new planet. We are close to being Supreme my friends. This past game against Norwich really was showing of our multitude of strengths. I am proud to be a Tottenham supporter today as I have always been but I,like many others have lived with the hope that we will get there and now that returnen to the garden indeed looks as promising as it ever has.

So with that and a date in Wales against Swansea I say COYS!!! and say that we are very very close to donning that Supreme tag again.
